Why am I getting duplicate emails from same sender all of a sudden?

I keep getting emails with "Undelivered Mail Returned to sender"?

  • I keep getting these emails saying Undelivered mail returned to sender. And on the bottom of these emails I get something written in Russian. I get them in my bulk mail too. What the h*** is going on here?

  • Answer:

Someone has captured your e-mail address off the internet and is sending spam to other people in your name (or your computer has been captured by a botnet - less likely.) When the company being attacked by these people automatically blocks the e-mail, you get it back. Look at the information it gives about the sent message. If it clearly was sent at a time your computer was powered off, then it was a use of your e-mail address forged on the fake message, so don't worry. If you leave your computer on all the time and are connected to an open connection (cable modem, DSL), then there is a chance your machine is infected and you might wish to look into further security.

Other answers

You could have a trojan running on your computer which actually hijacks your e-mail client and sends spam in your name. Run an updated antivirus program and an updated spyware program. Update your firewall and update your web browser. If you're using Windows, make sure it's up-to-date. To prevent it from happening again, don't visit sketchy websites and don't open e-mail attachments unless you were expecting them and the file extension matches what the person says it is.
