How can I change my e-mail address heading?

Why can't I change my itunes email address?

• I went to Store-->View my account then entered my new email address but it said "the email address you entered is already associated with an apple ID" then i log into my supposed 'other account' then it tells me that this new email address has not been used with an account yet! then it tells me to 'review my information' and somehow knows my address and everything already and is forcing me to enter credit card information. I figured I could go into this new account, delete it, then my new email address would be free to use for my original itunes account. though i don't want to enter any credit card information if i'm just going to delete it. how do I get out of this situation and just change my email address?
