    You can register at Minecraft.net for free and play the old version of the game (Alpha). You can use creative mode on single player and multiplayer Alpha servers. The newer game, with survival and much more to it, such as mobs/potions/dragons, etc, is the Beta version and gosts $20. Unless someone gifts the game to you, you cannot get this game for free.
