• what is the best free email service that allows you to download an application and have it on your desktop? Not like gmail, or yahoo mail.

  The whole idea of free web-based (like Gmail, or Yahoo! mail), is that no matter how many folders or how many emails you have, it never takes up space on your hard drive. A lot of people save everything. If all that when on their hard drives, there'd be a lot of crashed hard drives. There isn't likely any such thing as free non web-based email. But check with your internet provider. Many (probably most) providers provide an email address automatically with the service at no charge... so that would be free. If you'd really like free and your ISP doesn't include an email account with the service, I'd think about Gmail. I've had a Gmail account for over 6 months and have never received a single piece of junk mail or spam of any kind... not even in the Spam folder. There's also basically no advertising, other than a few non obtrusive links of to one side.
