How do I save/transfer old Yahoo email to my computer?

Download contents of Yahoo email folders to my computer for archiving?

  • Hi, Asked this question a few months ago and got couple of unfortunately unhelpful answers. Given all the new Yahoo features, is there now a simple way to download a Yahoo folder's worth of email to my computer for archiving purposes. I've been on Yahoo for years so have a lot of email I don't want to lose but can just be archived. Then I can clean up my Yahoo email. I have searched on this blog but haven't seen a clear or a recent answer that's helpful or that I can understand. Copy and paste contents of one email at a time is obviously unworkable. I see mention of POP but these are older (several years) answers. So I am looking for a simple and clear answer. Is there now a simple way to download a folder's worth of email in one shot? If not, what are simplest work arounds--if any? Do any of the other on-line services (Gmail, etc.) allow such downloading where I could transfer multiple messages stored on Yahoo to that service and then download? If Yahoo doesn't yet have such an archiving feature, I sure wish they would. Thanks for any up to date help on this. Tony.

  • Answer:

Moving or copying the contents of any email account to your computer for archiving, is the same as saying downloading your email into an email client program on your computer. This requires a program like Outlook or Thunderbird, and can be done using the POP3 or IMAP method. Yahoo only uses POP3 but unfortunately they only allow it for their PAID service - Yahoo Mail Plus. You can upgrade your existing account and then configure it in Outlook or Thunderbird in order to download the messages on to your computer for storage. To upgrade click Options > Mail Plus > Upgrade now > enter password > fill in payment card details for $19.99 annual fee to complete the process. Now go to your email program and use these settings to configure your email account: Incoming mail server settings * POP server: plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com * Use SSL * Port: 995 Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings * SMTP server: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com * Use SSL * Port: 465 * Use authentication * Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com", for example, “testing80”) * Email Address: Your Yahoo! Mail address (for example, [email protected]) * Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password
