What do I need to know about Servers?

I need to know if my email is POP3 IMAP or SMTP and my incoming and outgoing email servers?

  • I'm trying to send and email to someone and it is asking me if my email is POP3, IMAP OR SMTP and what my incoming and outgoing email server addresses are.

  • Answer:

Some people ask this type of question to find a way to forward yahoo emails (from the free account version without pop & forwarding facility) into Outlook. If you are not I apologise but just google the subject and you will see what I mean. Nothing personal. If so no worries as I know how...try this if you are. You can use the same mail box settings (IMAP) to tell your friend... Okay. Unless you have a Yahoo Plus account apparently you can't do it and there are lots of programs to bridge the gap but they have mostly been blocked, however ever since Yahoo let the iPhone get your mail there is a free way...You set up Outlook to mimic the iPhone so Yahoo thinks it's forwarding to it. Folllow each step and you will be fine. If you have set up any other pop accounts send an email to your yahoo account once you have followed the below to test it. To add your free yahoo email account emails into Outlook: Go into Outlook 2003 and add a new account. Set this up as "IMAP" and not POP but don't worry about it. In "User Info" place your name and yahoo email address as normal. In "Incoming mail server (IMAP)" type "imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com" (without quotes) In "Outgoing mail server (SMTP) type "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" (without quotes) In "Logon Info" type yahoo user name (eg yahoo email address without the @yahoo.com) In "Password" type your yahoo account password. Tick "Remember password". Tick "More Settings" button In first tab "General" rename your mail account to "imap.mail.yahoo.com" (without quotes) In 2nd tab "Outgoing Server" tick "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentification. Make sure the "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected Click "OK" Click "Next" Click "Finish" Your IMAP yahoo mailbox will appear in your "All Mail Folder" in Outlook Right Click directly over the mailbox "imap.mail.yahoo.com" and select "IMAP Folders..." When the pop up screen displays, click the "Query" button (to the right) A selection of folders will be displayed below in the "All" tab Select all of the folders (by highlighting the first one and holding shift key down as pressing the down arrow key...or do each one individually) Press the "Subscribe " button Make sure "When displaying hierarchy in Outlook, show only subscribed folders" is ticked. Press "OK" button Press F9 to do a manual email Send/Receive Any Yahoo emails will download into Outlook. A copy will stay on the yahoo server until you delete them in outlook Any "Spam" mail in yahoo will go into the "Bulk Mail" folder in Outlook. Also when you mark an item for deletion (by deleting or moving the email, it is displayed with strikethrough text in the header list. To permanently delete the items marked for deletion, do the following: On the Edit menu, click Purge Deleted Messages. If you do not purge deleted items periodically, you might reach and exceed the allotted disk space on your e-mail server. Hope this helps...nothing else worked for me and I had been looking at dozens of suggestions. Even MSoft reckons yahoo mail is all free now but they're woring as you know too. Yahoo! Mail Settings Yahoo Mail offers standard POP3 access for receiving emails incoming through your Yahoo mailbox, by using your favorite email client software. To setup your email client for working with your Yahoo account, you need to select the POP3 protocol and use the following mail server settings: Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110) Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25) In an attempt to control unsolicited email (spam), some Internet service providers block port 25. If you experience technical problems sending email, then you need to use port 587 when sending via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. Click on the link below to accomplish this... There are two sets of settings for Yahoo email. The first assumes that you are allowed POP3 access on the FREE accounts. Many of us have to use the PAID Yahoo Mail Plus accounts in order to access POP3 facilities, in which case the second set of settings would apply. 1) Yahoo! Mail Settings (if allowed) Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110) Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25) 2) Yahoo! Mail Plus email server settings Yahoo Plus Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995) Yahoo Plus Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 465, use authentication) If you need to upgrade, go to Options > Mail Plus > Upgrade now > enter your payment details for $19.99 annual fee to complete the process.
