How do I set up my Yahoo Mail account so I can view it Thunderbird (Mozilla application)?
-
Today I downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird, the mail application from Mozilla. Now, I got my .mac account onto there no problem, however I can't seem to figure out to use my Yahoo Mail account on it, also. I use my .mac account for official business, and my Yahoo for recreational stuff, but it'd be so much easier if I could check both from just one application. Does anyone know how to help me with this problem?

Answer:
Yahoo only offers POP and SMTP servers if you have POP access enabled (Mail Options). By default, yahoo.com accounts can not enable POP access unless you sign up for the Yahoo! Mail Plus option ($20 per year). Other national variants (e.g. yahoo.co.uk, yahoo.ca, yahoo.fr) can have POP access if you sign up to receive some advertising. If neither applies to you, there's another way, see below. If POP access is available in your account, click the "POP Access & Forwarding" option in the Mail Options. Select "Web & POP Access" to enable POP access. Then click "View POP Settings" to view the settings to use in Outlook Express, Thunderbird or whatever your mail client is. For example: Server Settings Incoming Mail Server (POP3): pop.mail.yahoo.com Use SSL, port: 995 Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.com Use SSL, port: 465, use authentication Account Name/Username: [email protected] Email address: [email protected] Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password Even if you have a Yahoo.com account without Yahoo! Mail Plus, you may still be able to enable POP (it appears to depend how old the account is) by using the "Set language, site, time zone" option to set your locale to "Yahoo! Asia": 1) click Options > Mail Options 2) click Account Information (you need to log in) 3) look for Account Settings: Set language, site, time zone You may have something like: Current setting: Yahoo! U.S. in English, America/Los_Angeles Click on "Set language, site, time zone" => New Setting: Yahoo! Asia Once that's done, log out of Yahoo! Mail and close any open Yahoo! Mail windows. Then open a new browser window and log back in again. In my experience you need to log out and log back in again for it to work. Now you can go into your Mail Options and enable POP access or mail forwarding as discussed above. Your mileage may vary, but it worked great for two Yahoo.com accounts of mine :-)
