Outlook Express... What is a POP3?
-
I'm trying to use Outlook Express to email an old friend, who I can't seem to contact through Yahoo mail. It says my POP3 isn't working, but I don't actually know what a POP3 is and what I am meant to do? What is a POP3? What am I supposed to enter as my POP3? Anything at all to do with Outlook Express? Thank you, please I need any advice.

Answer:
Outlook Express is just a program, not an email account. You use it by configuring your email account settings to work through the program. POP3 is one of the systems by which your account can be accessed by your program on the computer. Strangely enough, Yahoo doesn't allow this POP3 access for their FREE accounts. You need to upgrade to the PAID version - Yahoo Mail Plus in order to get it to work. If you do upgrade, here are the settings you'll need to use: Yahoo! Mail Plus email server settings Yahoo Plus Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995) Yahoo Plus Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 465, use authentication)

POP3 is just an email standard. There is also IMAP that is used by some systems. In order to use a separate email program, such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, or Thunderbird (see below), with Yahoo Mail you need POP3. It is also needed when using any program or right clicking on a file to directly send email. It is free in the UK, AU, and NZ but in the US you must pay for Yahoo Mail Plus. It is also required when you try to transfer the mail using smtp or pop3 to another online email. When you do you can set the servers as follows: Incoming (pop3) US - plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com Use SSL; Port 995 UK - pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk Use SSL; Port 995 AU and NZ - pop.mail.yahoo.com.au Use SSL; Port 995 Outgoing (smtp) US - plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com Use TLS; Port 465 UK - smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk Use SSL and TLS; Port 465 AU and NZ - smtp.mail.yahoo.com.au Use SSL and TLS; Port 465 NOTE: The same servers are used for ymail and rocketmail. Use the entire email address as the Yahoo ID. There is an add on for Thunderbird that will allow many web email accounts including Yahoo without the need for POP3. Go to http://webmail.mozdev.org/ NOTE: I have not been able to get this to work. Maybe it will not work with Beta yet. If you are running Thunderbird 3 and Yahoo Beta Mail and it works, please contact me. ₪ ʎəɿʞɹɐq ₪
