How do I get yahoo to work with mozilla thunderbird?

Can you use Yahoo Mail in Thunderbird?

  • I am trying to set up Yahoo in Mozilla's Thunderbird. I tried setting this up quite sometime ago and had no success with it. Then I did some Google searches about it and came across another Yahoo! Answers entry and it says that you have to pay for the service to do so. It's called Yahoo! Mail Plus a subscription based service. Does this mean that it is not possible whatsoever? If so I will delete it from Thunderbird right now... 2nd question, can you use Hotmail in Thunderbird? I can't seem to get that to work either.

  • Answer:

Go to Yahoo Mail Options, POP & Forwarding, then View POP settings (I think there's another step but just keep going until you get the server and port information). Write down what you find there. Then, in Thunderbird, click on create new account, but do NOT allow it to do automatic configuration (that only does IMAP, which won't work with Yahoo). Use the settings you wrote down and it will work. You do not have to upgrade to Yahoo Mail Plus.

It is not impossible. It is very easy to upgrade your account. Just click Options > Mail Plus > Upgrade Now > enter your payment details for $19.99 per year. You'll now have POP3 access to use your email account in Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Office Outlook, Windows Live Mail, and other such email programs. I'm not sure about Hotmail, but I thought I'd heard they moved away from premium accounts and allowed everyone POP3 access. Gmail allows FREE POP3 and IMAP access for ALL their email accounts.
