What do IMAP, POP3 and SMTP mean?

What does POP3 and IMAP mean?

  • A box came up asking for incoming mail (POP# and IMAP) server and out going email server (SMTP) Can someone explain what this means. In lamin terms please ;) thanks!

  • Answer:

p.o.p. stands for post office protocol and i.m.a.p. stands for internet message access protocol. these are the two standards for email servers, most isp's support both of these standards. the pop is the older system that was developed when there was only dial-up internet connections because you downloaded all the emails for you and they were removed from the server and then you disconnected from the internet. imap is newer and messages stayed on the server until you specifically deleted them, you can always connect to your isp;s dot.net and read email from some link there and find emails you had already seen in your computer, and have options to delete them.
