How do I set up to receive Yahoo email on my Mac?

POP issues: how do I set up Yahoo! Mail Plus in Mac Mail?

  • I just bought a new iMac and upgraded to Yahoo! Mail Plus so that I would be able to receive my emails through mac mail. I have set up Yahoo to enable POP under mail options, but I am not able to set up my email account in Mac Mail: I continually get an error message at the first step, saying that the server is not responding: "The yahoo.co.uk POP server “plus.pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages." I was on the phone with Apple support for over and hour and they checked everything, saying that it looked like it was an error on the server end, not Mac Mail. They said they have had similar issues before. I followed all the trouble shooting steps under Yahoo Support *http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/mail/ymail/mailplus/pop/;_ylt=Ah4AWcmj4ckw0qPz9ql2vDyfcHpG) checked the port setting etc. and still not working. I have waited over 24 hours thinking perhaps there is some lag in the yahoo mail plus settings to kick in (as I know you have to upgrade to mail plus for POP to work. I have tried calling Yahoo help multiple times but the line keeps dropping. This is so frustrating. Would really appreciate any help from Yahoo technical support or from any other yahoo and mac users that have resolved a similar issue. Thank you! Olive

  • Answer:

Not sure about .co.uk but yahoo.com no longer uses "plus" as part of the server name after upgrading to the Plus account. The "plus" port #s 995 & 465 are still used though, instead of 110 & 25. Incoming mail server settings * POP server: pop.mail.yahoo.com * Use SSL * Port: 995 Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings * SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com * Use SSL * Port: 465 * Use authentication * Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@domain.com", for example, “jo.bloggs”) * Email Address: Your Yahoo! Mail address (for example, [email protected]) * Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password Maybe you can amend these instructions to fit the .co.uk site.

Why do it the hard way? Just go to Yahoo, open Mail.
