How can I make my computer alert me with a ring or something when I get a new email?

I have seen this feature used in different TV programs and movies.

This will be different depending on which operating system you are using. I'll assume, for sake of providing an answer that might help here, that you are using Microsoft Windows...Millenium or XP. 1. Save the sound file that you want for your eMail to My Documents. Sound files should be in WAV format, or, need to have to named like "newmail.WAV"...though the CAPS are not necessary. 2. Click on the Start button and go to your Control Panel. 3. Click on the link for Sounds and/or Audio 4. Click on the Sounds tab. 5. Find the section that lists things like Windows, asterisk, Critical Stop, Default Beep.....find the entry for "New Mail Notification" 6. Highlight "New Mail Notification" and then down below click the Browse button. Browse to your "My Documents" folder, or wherever you saved the file, and double-click on it. Close the window. Your computer will now play that sound file when new eMail arrives. NOTE: repeat those steps to change mail sounds. Also, if you delete that sound file by accident - you will have NO sounds. If that happens, just copy the sound file back to that same folder, or change your Sound settings and select a new mail sound.

Some email programs are website based, like AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail. These are not on your computer, but on a server that you access via your browser. Some such website based email include a feature that alerts you to incoming mail, and others don't. So far, I only know about AOL, some friends have it, and I know it features an audio alert. I don't think that Yahoo has it. But if you have an email account through your isp that is accessed via an email program, such as Outlook or Thunderbird or Eudora, well then the program is on your computer and it contacts your isp and retrieves the email. These programs can be configured to contact the mail server at an interval you specify - every 3 minutes, every 10 minutes, etc. - and to make a sound of your choice when it finds incoming mail. For example, if you open Outlook Express, click Tools at the top, and click the general tab, there is an option "Play sound when new messages arrive." Fill in the box, and you will get the New Mail Notification sound you have chosen in Control Panel, Sounds And Audio Devices.

That's easy. All you have to do is make sure your Sound options are set. Go to the Control Panel and choose Sounds. You want to change the Event Sounds. See first link below. To make a change to the sound for an event, select the event in the Sounds Dialog box, then click on "Browse". This will open a file-search dialog allowing you to locate the file. Select the C: drive and look in your "Program Files" folder for the e-Speaking program folder (if you have installed e-Speaking). Then open the Sounds folder. You can download various sounds for different events through the Internet. (see second link below) The sounds are stored as WAV files on your computer. To update an even't sound, all you have to do is point the computer to the location of the appropriate sound.
