Why do messages sent thru my Outlook/Yahoo POP mail servers take HOURS to be delivered?
-
When I send emails thru the Yahoo Mail URL they are delivered immediately, but those sent thru my Outlook/Yahoo POP mail server configuration take 4 or 5 hours to be delivered. My Outlook sends them immediately after I press the "send" button, but Yahoo's POP mail server aparrently holds onto them for hours before delivering them. Is there something that can be done to resolve this?

Answer:
I've had this problem since February 15th, and my delays has been sporadic anywhere from 15 minutes to 12 hours (but mostly they are in the 5-6 hours range). I can understand if there is some exceptional outage or temporary hiccup, but what's frustrating is the lack of Yahoo! official communication on this, either in a public statement or at least in email to all paying Mail Plus customers, especially since this is a known problem for several weeks now. It took me several days just to realize that some important emails actually have been delayed (and in today's business world, you can imagine how costly this can be). The only semi-official communication by Yahoo! has been this blog entry: http://ymailupdates.com/blog/2008/02/19/email-delays-through-smtp-servers and a recorded voicemail on their hotline. A plethora of other Yahoo! users have confirmed this issue here too: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Amit6osJnTlsEkkA9ehl.wTsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080220055837AAlyslS http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvrvCijBWlwu_t3XYdcPDlfsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080220090405AAtgX0H http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtVQtAjxBs7QS9gEH2uQzcbsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080220114639AAdeO3r http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhRxN.3kDt57anIuu6ugcr3sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080220144809AA2LNsW http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlJXEBtdEPsE2FkgysSSoaHsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080221060812AA80myS http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Au0rh8Vz2XvebLJQCTtcBibty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080221065033AAww8Fk http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuLkay39oUDbFZm4B2Csok_ty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080218222756AAQ6KaC http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AoGMEHmUiuSDpQFNdQLWlhXty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080216073650AAjuPrz

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer. I'm having the same issue, but some of the emails are apparently never arriving! I don't like using the Yahoo web interface, which is why I use Outlook. Yahoo really needs to address this issue.

I'm having the same problem this week... some emails take over a day to be delivered! I've double-checked the Yahoo SMTP/POP server configuration info and it doesn't look like anything has changed. So, I am hoping it is just some sort of maintenance issue that will be resolved. However, I could not find any updates or info on the Yahoo Mail site... nor could I find a "contact/feedback" link. (That is disappointing considering I pay the extra for "Mail Plus".) For now, I would stick to using the browser mail client. Best of luck.

Thanks for these comments, better than the 4 messages between Yahoo support and myself. I guess "it's our fault" isn't in their suggested answer list. I watched yesterday as the support person kept using the "Test email" on my account as I recieved 10 "this is a test message from your Outlook account emails". Now it's only taking 9 hours to recieve a message. At least now I can stop pulling the last three hairs from my head. I have a yahoo business account and as you can imagine this problem that started over a week ago is really causing problems. I have critical information between my company and my clients that is taking 10 to 16 hours to deliver. Hard to wait that long on the phone. Also difficult to explain to your clients that your email system isn't being operated by a graduate of Clown College. If anyone hears of a solution (except for changing from Outlook to the Yahoo web interface, gee is that why this is happening?) please post it here.

This is a known problem that I have reported to Yahoo since Feb 8th. They keep saying they are escalating it for resolution, but it isn't fixed yet. I cannot get any answer about what is causing it, just generic apologies & assurances that "they're working on it". Even Yahoo's voicemail menu said "If you are calling about the outbound message delay..." On 2/15, I got an email from Yahoo that the problem was fixed- WRONG! My emails sent out last nite around 930pm did not actually go OUT via Yahoo's smtp server until about 625am this morning. Hard for me to understand WHY the media is not jumping on this major Yahoo problem that has caused grief for 1 1/2 weeks now . We hear enough about Microsoft offering to buy Yahoo, so.... I am also sending emails now directly from Yahoo & avoiding the smtp server, except for my "test" messages. Really annoying since I am PAYING Yahoo for MailPlus! I wonder if this problem is connected to Yahoo's authentication project with Ebay/Paypal. It certainly is taking them a LONG time to identify & fix whatever the problem is. Too bad Yahoo doesn't care enough about their customers to have a system announcement board to keep us informed!

Our money should be funding a working service. I pay for my yahoo mail account, and use outlook and it is crazy slow sending mail. There is a known problem that many people are having if not everyone who uses outlook and yahoo. I made a Gmail account, and it had free pop service, and worked fine in outlook. You can even add your yahoo email to your gmail and gmail will check mail in your yahoo account. I would imagine that yahoo is hurting from this. I mean I made a gmail account for the first time as a result of the outlook express problem

Same problem here. I changed the outgoing server to my home isp. I use AT&T DSL, which granted is smtp.att.yahoo.com, but that works a lot better now than smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
