Answer:
It's been like this for several weeks now. Multiple glitches started several weeks ago. Suddenly I couldn't send SMTP email at all, and discovered that alternate email addresses became case-sensitive. Had several useless replies from Yahoo support, but managed to fix this by myself. Then noticed the delay issue (they actually replied on one of my previous requests that they experiencing this problem so I start watching). Worst is that some of the incoming emails were rejected, and you would not even know about this! It's quite unbelievable that we pay for this kind of lousy service! There was no warning, no update, nothing from Yahoo to warn us. We shall all request to be refunded. This way the problem will be really escalated to right people, and not to anemic engineering department. I the meanwhile I discovered that with gmail you get the same level of functionality and more for FREE (including IMAP, which Yahoo doesn't have). I'm getting ready to move... Would be funny if Yahoo's reply to Microsoft was delayed too...

Same problem here with delayed smtp outgoing utilizing Outlook for my YHOO address. Coincidence that Jerry Yang is trying to pump up the valuation of YHOO with MSFT's bid? Demonstrate the need of YHOO service with MSFT applications?

When you call customer service there is a recording (or at least there was on Wednesday through Friday) that says they know they are having problems with their SMTP server and they have "escalated" the problem/ But the real problem is that they refuse to give an estimated time to repair. VERY POOR performance on their part. In the mean time you can use the yahoo mail web interface and things will work fine. It is frustrating nevertheless

Yes! The problem IS with Yahoo's smtp server! This problem has been reported to Yahoo since Feb 8, 2008! I have gotten NO explanation, just the "we're aware & working on it" reply. Friday evening 2/15, Yahoo sent me an email that the problem was fixed, but it is NOT! This only affects Yahoo emails sent by Outlook or a similar email client, which involves Yahoo's smtp server. If you send an email directly from Yahoo's website, it DOES go out immediately. Several emails I sent via Outlook hours ago STILL have not gone out. I send myself bcc's, so that I am aware when the emails are actually sent out. Most of them are delayed at least 6 hours, but the time delay is not entirely consistent. One of my messages was delayed just shy of 12 hours! What IS consistent, is that Yahoo has had this problem OVER A WEEK! and has not made any public admission of the problem, even tho many of us actually pay for Yahoo's Mail Plus. Very unprofessional....

There sure is a problem with Yahoo SMTP servers. And Yahoo knows it. Here is their own wording, (copied from an email they sent to me on Wed Feb 11 at 5:41pm cst): "We understand that your messages are delayed when you are sending messages using our SMTP servers." "Please be assured that we are aware of this issue and have escalated this to our Engineering Department for further investigation. We hope to have it resolved as soon as possible." Not that it matters, but a few minutes before that, they had sent me one saying, in essence: "Everything is working fine." I knew better, because I had read the headers on my tests. I only wish they had more competent engineers (like we are to be scared into submission by that word). This has dragged on for a week now. I send myself several emails each day to see if it is fixed. My results are anywhere from 0 delay to the record 11+ hour delay (sent 3:29am, available 3:07pm, CST) that I verified on Feb 12. Lots of 'em in the range of 2-3 hours. An occasional 6-er. And every once in a while a quicky (instantaneous) to give a glimmer of hope. It ain't just you! And dont waste your time calling their support number of 866.562.7219. You'll get a recording saying they "are aware of the problem and our engineers are working on it" or similar language. One time i waited for an actual person. Same thing: "Our engineers are working on it. I am so sorry we cannot do more." They've had a week at least. I, for one, filled out the form for them last Saturday (Feb 9). Wednesday afternoon (Feb13 @ 3:41pm CST) they sent this declaration of victory: " We've completed our investigation and were able to identify and resolve the mail delivery issue." Nope; they were wrong. A couple hours later, my tests showed that the problem was still there, and the headers proved it. There are lots of us paying money ($19.99/year for my account and the same I pay for my elderly mother's). It's not right. I've sure seen better.

A message from a friend who uses Yahoo was sent to me at 5:15pm (EST) on Thurs, 2/14, and it reached my gmail account at 4:30pm on Sat, 2/16.

I am seeing the same thing - messages sent via POP/SMTP and Yahoo are often delayed by several hours, sometimes up to 12 hours. This happens even when the message is just a cc back to myself, so it is completely within the Yahoo network. I have been seeing this for a couple of weeks. I reported it and was advised to check the delivered email headers - I did, and they show that the delay is occurring between Yahoo servers and is nothing to do with the email client (I use Outlook 2003).

I am experiencing the same problem - intermittently we see up to 12 hour delays on our yahoo hosted business mail. I've been directed to examine the email headers (the complete internet header) on the delayed emails once they are eventually received. Apparently there is some indication of when things were sent and received with time stamps but I'm not familiar with exactly how to interpret the results - I'd be happy if someone can answer your question with some definitive explaination of what's happening. Its so bad we are having to consider moving to another hosting company if we can't resolve this.

I am also having the same problem with Outlook 2003 on Vista with the exact same symptoms (no delay if I use Yahoo directly). Is Yahoo! Answers not monitored by Yahoo? It seems there are quite a few folks with the problem and no one yet with an answer. Yahoo! -- help us out here!
