Is it better to transfer a domain I own to my hosting provider or point the name server to my server for SEO?
-
I need to use a domain name that I own but it is registered with yahoo.com. I need to know if I just point the domain to my godaddy dedicated server, will that give me the same effect as transferring the domain over for search engine optimization? Will the site traffic, identification, and location have the same effects on Google, Yahoo and MSN results?

Answer:
Your DNS configuration won't affect your SEO as long as you don't use a URL redirect. All you need to do is map the name servers over to your new Godaddy hosing account and your website and Email will work normally (I assume you're hosting your domain email at GoDaddy too). That said... Always make sure your domain name is in a retail account in your name, but that's an asset protection issue, not an SEO one. Don't take this to mean I don't think you should transfer your domain registration to Godaddy. I do, but not for SEO reasons. I think GoDaddy is a better registrar than Yahoo. The support is better. The Domain control panel infinitely better. And while GoDaddy is an actual ICANN accredited registrar based right here in the US, Yahoo is just a reseller. Your actual registrar is Melbourne IT, a huge domain wholesaler headquartered on the other side of planet making it really hard to fix any Domain control issues that can crop up when dealing with reseller/hosts like Yahoo.
