Which would make a better 12-year-old's birthday present: A phone or an iPod Touch?

I wuld say ipod. Yu can add an app that lets yu text yur friends if yu hav wifi nd it free.

A phone is really expensive. You have to be able to pay for it monthly, which can be anywhere from 20-100 dollars a month (100 is extremem but it depends on the plan). Your parents have to either be willing to pay for it monthly or you have to have a job in order to pay for the phone. Phones need commitment, usually 2-3 year contracts for the phones unless you get a Pay-As-You-Go (Which in my opinion is a waste of money for a teenager if they plan on texting). The iPod would be my recommendation. Simply because I'm a music junky. As a teen and still today, I listen to music everday, every chance I get. So, if you don't already have an iPod - get one - it will be more useful and beneficial in the long run. There's always the option of an iPhone, which is both a phone and an iPod Touch, but it's extremely expensive. I have one, and it's about 60 dollars a month for my plan - and the actually phone cost me 150 dollars with the plan. AND if you lose the iPhone or have it stolen, you have to buy it at regular price, which is about 800 dollars. It also requires and 3 year contract with the phone service. So, all in all, iPod.

If I was a parent I wouldn't get your either at 12 years old. Buuut besides that.. Get a iPhone. It's literally both. But will be expensive monthly if you get a data plan so you can go on the internet.
