When is spring break over?

How and when did Spring Break start?

• I'm a full-time college student and I'm currently on my Spring Break. We go back tomorrow. I just saw a music video on MTV. They were showing some of their "Best of Spring Break Specials." The song made me really sad because the singer says he loves being in college because he can do drugs, drink and have anonymous sex (not in so many words but, yea, that's what he said). So, it made me wonder as to the true origin of a break in the middle of the school semester. I don't mean the Spring Break that we all know and "love" filled with vomit inducing drinking and tons of debauchery. I mean why did schools decide that students need a week off from school in the middle of the semester? I looked it up online and read the Wikipedia.org definition as well as a couple of other sites but nothing really seemed to make sense, let alone give me the answer as to why we have a week in the middle of the semester. Does anyone know the true origins of Spring Break?

  Spring Break originated with the ancient Greeks. As winter would lessen its chill, and thoughts turned to regeneration, rejuvenation, and new birth, Athens's elders noticed that the young people became particularly frolicsome. Socrates then proposed, and the Greeks adopted, a wild rite to welcome Spring and allow young people to vent their ingrained urges… and Spring Break was born. Immediately thereafter were heard the first complaints that these strange new rites were destructive of morals and caused undue hardship upon the local residents of the seaside towns in which the festivals were held.
