What's the history of Valentine's day?

Whats the history behind Valentines day? Why do we celebrate it today?

  • Answer:

St. Valentine's Day was originally meant as a Christian means of distracting Romans from celebrating Lupercalia, a lover's holiday, on February 15th. According to the book, "In 469 C.E., Pope Gelasius set aside February 14th to honor St. Valentine, a young Roman who was martyred by Emperor Claudius II on this day in 270 C.E. for refusing to give up Christianity. Because of the proximity of the two dates, many customs associated with the Lupercalia were carried over to the Feast of St. Valentine."

St. Valentine cut off his ear and sent it to his love, a la Vincent Van Gogh. Why this is now celebrated as a love day, I'm not really sure. Why do we do anything?
