Whats the point of memorial day?

  • Being an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, i really can't see the purpose of memorial day. Me and every veteran I know (which is a lot) is working all weekend and memorial day. Young veterans have to work no matter what to get by, its an extremely difficult time. Whats even the point of taking a day to appreciate veterans when everyone that celebrating it isn't a vet? Its kind of like have a teacher appreciation day were everyone else but teachers is off for the day. So, anyone have any idea why we have this veterans holiday that the majority of veterans can't celebrate. Whats the point of such a holiday if the people getting celebrated can't celebrate themselves.

    It does seem ironic, but I guess that's part of the reason the military is honored on this day, they never get a day off from defending our freedoms. thanks!

You my friend you or i arent the reason for Memorial Day but the ones who have died for our freedom are.I am a disabled Viet Nam Vet ,82nd Airborne Infantry platoon combat medic, and i honor those who died,as you and all Vets know,Freedom isnt Free somebody paid for it and gave all.Take time to honor those.God Bless

It was supposed to be to honor out veterans, but it's turned into a day of discounts and mall shopping. Which doesnt surprised me, people dont care about veterans or soldiers for that matter. People only care when there's a war. I have a brother who is in the military and I've been to veteran hospital and I was shocked at the way this guy are treated. It's shame, it's an embarassment, specially when you think that America is a country that likes to tell tell people what to do and how to treat their people, and we cant take care of the people that fight our wars.

I guess it's just a day to remember how many people have died because of wars, a day to aperate the thousands of men and women that sacrficed their lives for us, for everyone, for our country, a day to remind us how lucky we are for those people, a day to tell us that if it was not for them we would not be here, and that they are the heros of our nation, our country and that they fought to keep us free and pround.

Hold on cowboy. there are those of us vets who do get to enjoy the day off. (Desert Shield/Storm Vet) This is just another one of those aspects of America that should be modified when you guys get back to real life and decide to run for office.

Well I , for one want to say a BIG thank you to all the armforces who are serving home and over seas............and I hope they all come home safe and sound.

also being a veteran, having served from 1983-1987 It was my ship the USS CONYNGHAM DDG-17 that saved the USS STARK when it was hit by two exocet missles fired from Iraqi fighters in May of 1987 in which 37 sailors had lost their lives. Those young men are to be not so much "celebrated" as the are to be REMEMBERED. Unfortunately Memorial day coincides with opening of beaches and parks marking the "beginning os Summer which is what more people associate Memorial day to be. A Celebration of the pending summer rather than the remembrence of Military Soldiers and Sailors that have died during combat duty not just In Iraq, Afghanistan or Vietnam...but WWII WWI Civil War, Revolutionary War, and other conflicts where we as the United States we either forced or offered help to other countries as aid may have perished in the line of duty. Because we live free...... you should celebrate. But remember it was at a cost. The lives of Veterans
