How many people celebrate Christmas, hannukah, kwanza or other?

  • As for me I was raised in a Christmas-celebrating family. I was wondering now that "merry christmas" had chnaged to "happy holidays'" if there are more people celebrating different holidays I was also wondering what is Hannukah like and kwanza ?! So could you give me a % of people who celebrate xmas hannukah, kwanza or other or all or two thnx and have a good holiday everyone

  • Answer:

Well, no one has to say Happy Holidays... or Merry Christmas. You say what you want, let others say what they want. I grew up in a religiously diverse NYC neighborhood-- everyone always said Happy Holidays to strangers in passign or in stores-- back since as far as I can remember in the 1970s, before anyone thought of it as insulting. My family is Pagan and celebrates Yule, the Winter Solstice, a few days before Christmas. It's a lot of fun-- a lot of Christian traditions came out of Yule, like decorating evergreens, exchanging gifts, hanging mistletoe, singing carols & songs, etc. so on the surface it probably looks similar to your celebration. On the eve of the Solstice we light candles to celebrate the return of the Sun & the light, we have a feast, read stories about Solstice, bake cookies & bread, say prayers, and in the morning we get up early and watch the sunrise. If you're talking percentages,it's hard to calculate because some families celebrate more than one holiday while others celebrate none. There are also more than just Hannukah and Kwanzaa-- there's also the Muslim holidays (Eid, Ramadan) that sometimes fall in December, there's Pagan Winter Solstice festivals, there's a Chinese Winter Solstice, there's a Buddhist holiday in December (Bodhi day) there's also the secular celebrations like Festivus for people who aren't religious. I suppose you could break it down this way: about 70% of the country identifies as Christian-- meaning about 30% do not. And of the 70%, not all Christians celebrate Christmas, some religious sects prohibit it because of it's roots in the Pagan festivals and because it's not Biblical. But almost everyone celebrates New Years.
