Other than Hanukkah and Christmas are there any other religious holidays this time of year?
-
i got told off for saying "merry christmas" to a friend of mine who came from a family of very orthodox jews, but he said the same thing, they celebrate christmas (not for religious reasons obviously), my teacher (a catholic) pulled me aside to yell at me! my teacher said that the more polite term is "happy holidays" because there are a lot of other religious holidays around this time of year and it's a lot nicer to say "happy holidays" because you could offend someone i know that hanukkah is around the same time, and new years is right behind but hanukkah is jewish and christmas is christian which are two of the largest faiths in the world are there any other religious holidays around this time of year? i'm not one of those crazies that say we shouldn't say "happy holidays" i say it as much as "merry christmas", i'm just mad i got told off for it by a catholic and am wondering if there are any other holidays this time of year because when i asked my teacher he only listed those three, only two of which are religious and i'm very familiar with the traditions and beliefs of both faiths

I can't believe your teacher yelled at you. That's nuts. Yes, a lot of people celebrate different holidays... happy holidays makes more sense when talking to strangers and such... but no one really gets offended at Merry Christmas. The problem comes when people say it as if they're saying, "I'm wishing you a Merry Christmas-- now what are you gonna do about it, sucker!??" But basically, any well-meant holiday greeting is a good one. Anyway, I'm Wiccan, we celebrate Yule, which is from a Germanic Pagan holiday. There are lots of different types of Winter Solstice holidays/celebrations from various Pagan groups. There's a Buddhist holiday in December (Bodhi day) There are also Muslim and Hindu holidays that move around and don't always fall in December but do sometimes.
