Why do Americans say Happy Holidays, not Happy Christmas?

Why do Americans always say happy holidays in place of merry Christmas?

  • I always watch commercials and other things and all they say is "Happy holidays" without ever saying merry christmas. The same applies to when people see each other, they say Happy holidays. How many holidays at all do workers get in December especially during the Christmas period? Its only on the 25th and perhaps 1st of January to,but all they say is happy holidays. Can someone explain the rationale behind this greetings or statement and why dont people just say Merry christmas as most Saxons do?

  • Answer:

people have turned christmas into an economic boost where the people are to buy a ton of gifts and give them to people they love. which is not the true meaning of christmas. however they say happy holidays because everyone celebrates christmas now but not everyone is Catholic so saying merry christmas to someone Jewish or Buddhist might offend them so they try to please everyone by just making it non religious and saying happy holidays.

Because the ******* liberal bigots with their politically correct bullshit ruined it for everybody.

Because christmas is referred to as a christian/catholic holiday. What about people of other beliefs and their holidays?

What I love about all these people who won't say Merry Christmas is that they don't mind taking the day off for Christmas. When it comes to getting time off, everyone happily turns into a Christian for the day. My opinion is that if you dont celebrate it then see you Monday morning at the office at 9am. For all of those who don't celerate Christmas, remember Christmas is the reason you have the day off! When is the last time my boss offered me a Kwanza week? MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE ON EARTH!!!!!

Not everyone celebrates Christmas. There are many different religions and holidays, saying happy holidays includes everyone, not just Christians. Also to the person who said says Happy holidays could offend christians, that is just stupid. It's not saying "happy holidays, there is no god!" Saying merry christmas is offensive because not everyone believes in christ. The term holidays is a nice term for everyone, not an antichrist term.

They don't want to offend anyone who is not Christian or who does not celebrate the birth of Christ.

Sooo Happy

Because a lot of societies these days are multi-cultural, so not everyone celebrates Christmas. It is therefore better to say happy holidays so that you are including everyone.

Because not only is it Christmas time you also have Hanuka, & New years eve, so to say Happy Holidays covers all 3 Depending on which you observe*
