Answer:
My 14 year old niece and her friends had a great time at her 'purple' slumber/birthday party recently. My sis put old sheets on the floor and told them to bring their sleeping bags. They had to wear purple (my niece loves purple), and bring something purple for the party, like a song with purple in it or picture of something purple, to get in the door, like a secret code. Her little brother was the door guard, and he wore a purple shirt (looked cute, too), so he was OK with not wrecking the party because he felt pretty important doing that. They had heaps of junk food (with some 'real food' available too!), such as popcorn, chips, lollies, etc, all purple. Even the soft drink was coloured purple with food dye (from the supermarket). The paper plates, napkins even the cutlery was purple. They had face paints, make up, dvd movies they picked themselves and were allowed to stay up as late as they wanted (most were actually asleep by 11 pm but they felt very grown up about it). The big thing was, once all the girls were there (six or seven of them), my sis spent only about half an hour with them, then left them to it, just going in every so often to check on things (but making out she was just bringing more food, soft drink, etc). She wanted them to feel they were running the show themselves, although she did get them to come into the family room where the 'hrown ups' were for cutting the cake and singing 'Happy Birthday'. It was hilarious! They were having so much fun, I wanted to go to the party too! We could hear them laughing and talking two rooms away! Originally, she wanted to take them ten pin bowling, but it was a bit pricey at this time, so she settled for the purple party. It was a little more work, but not even very much, because there is such a lot of variety available these days she was able to buy most things she needed. Picking the other colours out of the bags of coloured popcorn was also fun for the little brother! For a pretty easy party, which the kids will enjoy (girls anyway, not sure about boys), a 'simple 'theme' which lets them dress up and be a bit silly is a great way to go. One important thing ~ my sis talked with all the parents first to check out re allergies and also that it was OK to let the kids stay up late. She also invited all the parents to an 'adult' get-together (coffee, cake and chit chat), so the parents knew that everything was fine and there was no alcohol or anything like that going on. It actually worked out well, because she was pleased to get to know a couple of the parents she hadn't met before and they had a fun night also. Hope whatever you do goes really well!
