What is a purchase charge on a gift card?

Is a $3.50 charge to purchase a Visa gift card absurd?

  • A woman in my office wanted to purchase four $50 Visa gift cards (the kind you can use at any store). The teller told her that there is a $3.50 charge per card in addition to the $50 she wanted to put on the card. She freaked out and left the bank. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Does a $3.50 surcharge sound ridiculous to you? I know most companies don’t charge for a gift card, but you can only use the card in their store. So the surcharge makes sense to me. What do you think?

    I think it's pretty ridiciulous for the ammounts most of us are likely to spend. For a 7% surcharge, you're better off stuffing a $50 bill in a Christmas card. That'll cost you a couple of bux too--but at least they'll have a nice card.

I work in a bank. The surcharge is made of two parts. One part is profit that goes to the bank and the other is the fee that visa charges. If there is no fee then it would be a free service. 3.50$ is not bad at all. If she is still upset tell her to send cash. Even money orders and cashier's checks charge a fee.

Well yah kinda... Because what if you wanted to buy a lot . Then the cost would rapidly go up. Like she wanted four, she'd have to pay $14 more . I mean... Like it kind of is. Its unfair.
