What's the best way to celebrate Bastille Day?

Ok, I am planning a trip to Paris on Bastille Day 14th July this year (2010). I have already sussed out accommodation so this isn't the problem. I have also lived in Paris, albeit a few years ago, so have a rough idea of the RER network etc. The trip is a surprise for my father who wants to see the Bastille Day parades, specifically the French Foreign Legion. Could someone please give me some advice on how best to view the parades and what the best way to go about it is. Also I have heard the Metro is shut on Bastille Day. Is anyone able to confirm this? Thank you in advance.
