What in the hell's with Boxing Day?
-
I live in America, and we don't celebrate Boxing Day. What is Boxing Day supposed to commemorate and what is it's purpose? Thanks, your answers are always appreciated!

Answer:
Servants would have the day after Christmas to go visit their families, as they were all working on Christmas Day and were needed to cook and cater the celebrations of their employers. There were boxing matches held in some areas...but some believe that the 'boxing' part came from the servants being allowed to box up leftovers to take home to their family. Also in some places the 'gift box' was given by the employer the next day. I loved having two days to visit and celebrate when I still lived in England. One day is just not enough.
