Why do Americans say Happy Holidays, not Happy Christmas?

Is It Offensive To Say "Merry Christmas" Opposed to "Happy Holidays"?

  • It's just a habit to say Merry Christmas, since it was always said on tv, well more so than Happy Holidays, but I'm just wondering if it's offensive or politically incorrect. Preferrably from people who don't celebrate Christmas.

  • Answer:

I think its okay for Merry Christmas. I think Christmas is so commercialised now that anybody can celebrate it. But obviously it may be offensive to some. And yes, great name. I'm seeing them in March! WOO! I'M ON THE STEREO...!

It is considered politically incorrect; Jews, Muslims, and atheists (and others) do not celebrate Christmas and therefore might be put off by that. Some people will get offended, so Happy Holidays is always a safe bet. That said, I think people need to lighten up. If it's said in the spirit of being friendly and kind, I appreciate kind thoughts. Same goes with God Bless You instead of Gesundheit. Are you a pavement fan, slanted and enchanted? If so, you rock.
