Can I get a residence permit to run my new business in adelaide with out leaving the country? If I have to leave, it would be a very bad start for the business.

Answer:
There are only two visas that I know of that are available for investors or business people to stay in Australia in order to establish and/or invest in an Australian business. Both can only be granted while the applicant is outside Australia unless they are here on a student visa. Tourist visas are designed solely for genuine tourists and it is very difficult to ever be granted a different visa while a person is on one, much less a visa that is only available to applicants outside Australia. Extending Your Stay You may want to extend your stay in Australia for further study, graduation, a holiday, work or migration. Reasons for extending your stay You can only extend your stay in Australia if you do not have a 'No Further Stay' condition on your current student visa. The following table outlines your visa options to extend your stay in Australia. http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students/extending_your_stay/index.htm

You will most probably be regarded as having broken the terms of your tourist visa by buying a business with (presumably) the intention of working illegally. You'd be better off returning to the states and then applying properly. You will have to meet the minimum investment requirements to get the visa you need.

No, I'm afraid I don't think you can stay unless you are investing very large amounts of money into the business and have a very high net worth. It might have been better to find that out first before buying the business.

you can not apply for permanent residency from with in australia unless you have studied in australia for at least 2 years and got your qualifications there.......so you will have to go home and apply from there and wait your turn

Although I admire your enterprizing spirit, and we need more of that in Australia, I'm not sure if that was even a legal move!
