Winter New Zealand Surfing = Freeze to Death?
-
I am still in the process of planning my 6 week trip to NZ, Aus, and SA. I thank all the people that have helped me so far in answering my questions! Next is this: I am a California native, now living in Florida, so surfing is something I love to do. From some of the research I've done online on surfline and such, I figure that SA is great surfing this time of year... What about NZ and Aus? I know I'll need a wet suit, but will that do? Do people still surf in winter there? Where at? Any info at all would be great! Thank you.

Yeah surf all year round but probably better to surf East Coast, Region, North Island and Raglan, because it will be warmer. A 7mm wetsuit is standard in most parts of the country no matter what the season, 5mm is ok further north. Further North is warmer. Water temp is 12-18 Deg C in Summer and only 8-14 in winter, depending on location. You can count on 14 most of the time. Cold water surrounds New Zealand because of its location in the Roaring Forties. In the north of the North you might get 16 Deg C in winter

Not to worry. I live in Dunedin, southern NZ, which is easily the coldest of all the regions you've mentioned. Today we are seeing temperatures at freezing point, and the past few days haven't been much above that. Yet, the surfers are out and about in their wetsuits at the beaches. Some of them strike me as tough cookies, but you should be fine on an average day in winter, which isn't necessarily that cold even down here.
Tahini Classic
They surf all year around on the Gold Coast 1 hour by train South of Brisbane. You will love it . Warmer here than down South. Safer as well . We have shark nets out at sea and regular spotting helicopters going over. Great Surf most days all year around . Many competitions are held here and a big choice of beaches. New Zealand will be very cold

New Plymouth / Taranaki's boast is that you can go surfing in the morning and snow skiing in the afternoon (or the other way round if you wish). The guys are out winter surfing here... surf all year. Good spot at Back Beach near Paritutu Rock in town, Oakura is another popular spot. Our coast road is called Surf Highway 45 for pretty good reason! Manganui Ski field is on Mt Egmont, about 40 minutes drive from the beach. http://www.newzealandnz.co.nz/surfing/taranaki.html http://www.windwand.co.nz/surfhw45.htm http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&q=Taranaki+surfing+spots+nz&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq= enjoy!
