Which is better to Visit North or South Island of New Zealand?

Should we visit New Zealand's North Island first, or South Island first?

  • Will be there in March for 4 weeks. Flying into Auckland. Thought we may catch another flight to Christ Church and tour the South Island first while the weather is warmer and work our way north. Any advice?

    if your flying into Auckland then I'd stick to the North island first and fly out of Christchurch at the end. It won't be cold in the south island throughout march and early April, in fact the weather is often most settled then and the differences in temperature between the North and south island don't vary THAT much. You'll obviously need to pack some warm clothes for windy/wet days which you could get on either the north or the south island and the temperatures get quite cool overnight (maybe as low as 10 degrees celsius). Start in Auckland but spend less time in the North Island . The trip from Wellington to Picton on the ferry is lovely . When in Wellington take the cable car trip up to the Botanical gardens they are so lush and beautiful and you get a view over Wellington up there. Then travel down the West Coast of the South Island drive around Queens Charlotte Sounds to Nelson and The Able Tasman national Park from Kaiteriteri then on to Westport and to Fox Glacier Franze Joseph and down through Wanaka to Queenstown . Back to Christchurch to fly out

I would do the North Island first. The scenery in the North Island is very pretty, but a bit tame compared to the South Island. I think the North Island would seem a bit tame after seeing the South Island.
