    The North Island is the most populated, has more "cultural"aspects in that there are more maori and more cultural things in the tourist area. There are some nice places...but I have to say I haven't seen a huge amount of the North Island..i hear the bay of islands is nice, mt Tongagriro national park....with some volcanoes....thats what the North Island has is lots of volcanoes (active/dormant) THe South Island is considered the more scenic with breath taking places..you could pretty much swing a cat and hit something nice and pretty. It depends on what you want to see and do! People in the North Island moan about how cold it is in the south island but we are more likely to get hotter weather in the eastern parts in the summer, in the winter we are closer to ski fields!!

(The huge mountain ranges, Milford Sound, Fox Glacier). - North Island has the main cities of Wellington and Auckland, the volcanic area of Rotarua and most of the counrtyside of the North Island is beautiful undulating farmlands, populated by millions of sheep.
