What are a few sprawling up and coming cities (suburbs) in PA?

In Australia, are suburbs separate cities, or just sections of the city?

  • Hi, Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are suburbs separate cities/towns? I've seen people on YA write, "[name of suburb] isn't a city, it's a suburb!" Here in the US (and even Canada), suburbs are cities/towns outside of major cities. For example: I live in Royal Oak, which is a suburb of Detroit. It's a completely separate city with its own government and a population of about 60,000. It's far enough from Detroit to be VERY safe but close enough that anyone wanting to go to Detroit can (though I don't why anyone would voluntarily go to Detroit -- it's an absolute $hithole!). Just wondered about the term "suburb" and if it's used the same way we use it here in the US (and even Canada)? And if the term suburb means something different, what do you call actual cities/towns near the larger cities? Thanks!

  • Answer:

It's very difficult to compare the countries in this respect. Australia's system of local government is very different from that of the USA and the term 'suburb' has a different meaning in each country. In Australian terms, Royal Oak would probably not be a suburb of Detroit, but would be part of 'Greater Detroit' and would be a city in its own right, with its own suburbs. If Detroit (and perhaps even Royal Oak) are broken into districts (or boroughs or large neighbourhoods), those districts etc would be roughly equivalent to Australian suburbs. Essentially, an Australian suburb is generally within about 15km of the city centre. When an adjacent city or town grows enough to link up with the major city, it usually then becomes part of 'Greater Sydney (or Brisbane etc).

Once you leave the CBD (central business district) all else is considered "the suburbs" in Australia (although they may be classed as "cities" according to local councils, just to confuse everyone). But no...once the tall buildings are in the rear vision mirror, you are in the 'burbs. Any gathering of people/buildings divided from the city and suburbs by enormous expanses of nothingness are called towns. The difference between a town and a city comes down to population I believe. I'm not sure what the magic number is.

Suburbs are smaller units within a city. So Sydney has many suburbs which make up the city. A large group of suburbs are run by the local council. These make up a city

Suburbs are sections of a city, but there are also cities within some cities. Here in Sydney Australia we also have several cities,Blacktown,Parramatta & Blue Mountains city. All have their own suburbs.

they are both. the suburbs of melbourne include such places as the city of brunswick, the city of coburg, the city of stonnington, etc. however the suburbs are linked to the city and are considered part of it the cities and towns near the major cities are called cities and towns. some of the larger regional cities also have suburbs

It depends on which city you're referring to. For example Brisbane is one large city with suburbs all under the control of one local government council, Melbourne is divided into a number of cities eg the City of Knox, City of Monash etc which each have their own council. Edit: Brisbane City Council (BCC) is the largest city council in the Asia Pacific region, the city is spread over 2,116 square km (817 square miles).

suburbs are like smaller sections within a city sort of like this: New York is your city the burrows(manhattan, brroklyn, long island ect) are kind of like big suburbs :)
