What's the weather like in New Zealand?

I am moving to New Zealand, what is it like?

  • Ok yeah so, im moving to New Zealand (WELLINGTON) So i was just wondering if any of you live, or have been there. Whats it like? people, weather, etc. Also, what is there to do there? (for fun) I heard about the Te Papa museum.. Also, what is the ocean like? Do they have good stores? Like, I heard they don't even have wal mart or target over there...

  • Answer:

LOL you think we don't have good stores because we don't have Wal-Mart and Target. This ain't America, mate, things are going to be A LOT different. People - People are friendly, some might give you are hard time because you are American, but if you are a decent person you'll be alright. We have a different way of thinking, I have found out, and our humour is a lot different to USA. You guys seem to think that people getting hurt is funny. We don't think that's funny. We think that is downright rude and mean. Apparently we are VERY sarcastic compared to USA. Weather - The weather is schizophrenic, it changes a lot in a short amount of time. Like it can be freezing cold and raining in the morning and then in the afternoon it can be nice and fine and warm. You say you are going to Wellington, it can get pretty windy there. Winters aren't as cold as USA, and Summers aren't as hot as USA. There are a lot of different things you can do for fun, I can't really mention them here because i'm not from Wellington, so you'll have to find them when you get here, or maybe some other answerer can help with that one. Shops - We may not have Wal-Mart, but we have The Warehouse, which is like our verison of Wal-Mart. We have Kmart, and then we got all these really awesome shops for different types of things like clothes etc, we have loads of different chains and brands. We got your typical McDonalds, Burger King etc but we don't have Taco Bell. We don't really have Dr Pepper, I've only found it once ever, in this random as dairy selling all sorts of stuff. What we call a Dairy is what you would call a Convenience Store. We don't really have all of your candy either, like Reeses, Sour Patch Kids, Twizlers, Pop Tarts etc but we have our own Lollies (Lollies = Candy) which are just as good. Like Pineapple Lumps. I have found your candy veeeryyy rarely, and that was at Kmart. We use a lot of different words over here: Convenience Store - Dairy Candy - Lollies Flip Flops - Jandals I don't exactly know what you call Gumboots - I think you call them Wellingtons or Muck Boots or something. The local youth say stuff like 'Mean bro' which basically means 'Cool'. 'Chur' - 'True' Ocean is cold in Winter, warm in Summer.

I was born in new Zealand and lived there until, like, a year ago. The ocean is VERY different to anything you will find in America or Australia. The sand is mostly hard shell, and the sand and sea are both usually very dark. But it depends where you go. On the north island, some places have crystal clear water. The beaches also almost all have big cliff faces around them. There are a lot of small beaches, and depending on what beach there can be no one there to hundreds there. The weather differs depending on where. Wellington is notorious for being EXTREMELYYY windy and quite rainy and overcast. In the summer it never gets over 27 degrees celcius (hardly) but the sun in the summer over there is the perfect temperature. dO NOT sunbathe in NZ, unless you have sunblock on, because it is the worlds most dangerous and easiest place to get skin cancers. There is NOT a lot to do in New Zealand at all. It's actually kinda boring unless you make lots of friends. All there really is to do is adventure sports(sky diving etc), look at scenery, go to the beach and shop. The shops in NZ will be a MAJOR shock to you after America (I'm guessing as you said wal mart). The shopping centers, aka malls, are tiny and have on average a total of 30 small shops. There is a few targets in NZ, like, 2 or something. They do have KMart which is EXACTLY the same as target. They have MYER! Which is a department store. The people are very friendly, and especially easy going. When you first get there you will notice that everyone looks really sleepy and don't hurry to do anything. But its okay, they are very nice bunch of people. So don't even worry about that. As for the wildlife, there are will rabbits and hares, lots of farms, a lot of birdlife, possums, hardly any kiwis. The economy is not so great there at the moment, thats why j moved to Australia. To be honest it's not exactly wise financially to be moving to NZ right now. Overall, I think you will find new Zealand a little boring, but you grow to love it. I miss it a lot :) well have fun, and don't worry! :)

I love Wellington and was bought up there . Had a great child hood there but now choose not to live there as I hate the weather. and much prefer The Gold coast in Australia. How ever I had an awesome time in my teenage years there. Wellington is ssmall compared to other Cities in the World but it's nestled below hills and really quite pretty. They have some great boutique style shops and the food is great. There is a supermarket in one of the main streets that sell wonderful takeaway foods You won't know what to buy first. The book shops are great and the ride in the cable car and a walk through the botanical gardens is lovely you get views over the City. Be in Wellington in nice weather and it's awesome there are a few little beaches around Oriental bay and some good places to go for a drive. up the Kapiti Coast is nice and you could even do a day trip or have a weekend away by getting on the ferry to picton. The people are friendly and I believe there are plenty of pubs and bars but I'm not in that scene there now. They have a big coffee culture scene. There are nicer places to live in the Wellington area and a few that aren't as good. I like around Ngaio khandallah area or raumati somewhere a bit sheltered from the freezing winds they get. I prefer Wellington to the other Cities in NZ.

Wellington has all the stores you'll need, even if they're not WalMart or Target. It has beautiful views over the harbor, lots of interesting cultural things to do, and pretty friendly people for a city. However, be warned, it's WINDY!

You may find some of your answers by looking up the city you will be moving to. You could also look up if there are any Walmart's there? Good luck on your move.
