Question about the Paramedic career?

What is the best way to work as a paramedic in New Zealand and Australia?

  • I know this is a bit of an off question but I am currently an EMT-B and am looking for jobs as such in my local area. I live in Somerville, Ma. It's a densely populated urban city next to Boston so I know it'll be a busy and beneficial experience working in Emergency Medicine. I plan to pursue my career and become trained to the paramedic level and work as such here in the United States, but only for a bit. Here is were the NZ and Aust. thing come in. It's always been my dream to work in one of those places. I don't know how to explain it but to do what I love to do and doing it were I would love to live sounds so blissful. I know St. Johns Ambulance runs most of the 911 calls in those two countries so how would I be able to get on that service coming from the US and already trained to a Paramedic level, what might be considered a Critical Care Paramedic over in New Zealand? Most Paramedics here can work with 40+ different drugs, many of them cardiac related. I understand residency and such but how about getting the job, and getting paid for it? I don't want to sound like I am in it for the money but this is a profession I want to make a living off of. If anyone can give me an idea or point me in a direction that will be awesome.

First you should work out where you want to live and then ask that states Ambulance Service how qualified people from overseas can apply for a position. Like other people have already mentioned the biggest challenge you will have is trying to get a visa to enter Australia or New Zealand.

Australia's paid Paramedics work for our state ambulance services. A new Skilled Occupations List (SOL) is due out soon and Emergency Paramedic or something similar will probably be on there and if so, gaining PR shouldn't be too difficult though it will depend on the equivalence of your qualifications with Australian requirements. Also, at least two of our ambulance services (QLD & NSW) accept recruits from overseas with QLD offering permanent visa sponsorship and NSW probably also prepared to offer it if required. http://www.ambulance.qld.gov.au/recruitment/qualified.asp Queensland Ambulance http://www.ambulance.nsw.gov.au/employment/paramedic_recruitment/uk_applicants.html In New Zealand, there are two employers, St John Ambulance and Wellington Free Ambulance and both employ both paid and volunteer paramedics. Paramedics are evidently needed in New Zealand as the occupation is on their Long Term Skills Shortage List (LTSSL) which augurs well for getting a visa and finding work: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/templates/custom/SearchskillshortagesPopup.aspx?NRMODE=Published&NRNODEGUID=%7B17CCA408-8572-4E07-80EB-26FAC203D4F7%7D&NRORIGINALURL=%2fmigrant%2fstream%2fwork%2fskilledmigrant%2fLinkAdministration%2fToolboxLinks%2fessentialskills.htm%3flevel%3d3&NRCACHEHINT=Guest&level=3 LTSSL http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/skilledmigrant/caniapply/requirements/default.htm NZ Skilled immigration http://www.wellingtonfreeambulance.org.nz/OverseasApplicants.htm

US qualifications for paramedics should be acceptable both here in Australia and in New Zealand, you will just need to get the correct visa for the length of time that you want to stay, before applying for a position as you will need to prove your right to work in Australia before getting the job.

In Australia, its not a highly paid profession compared to the US. Unfortunately Residency is required before you get the job - and you cant get residency without getting in on a professional visa on a different career path - so if you are also qualified as a teacher, nurse etc then apply as that. Once you are here you could apply for the other job but you need to get here first.
