What is the Jan/Feb rainfall duration in Townsville, Australia like during a typical day?
-
I will be going to Australia for the last week of January and the first week of February this year. I'd like to go somewhere that is really hot with warm beach waters. I have been looking at staying on Magnetic Island off the coast of Townsville, but I am told that it rains all of the time. Does it mostly rain all day long or just for a half of an hour or so and then it stops for the day (like it does in Florida)? Is there usually bright sunshine for a few hours each day during this time of year? Any suggestions for beaches that I should go to during that time where the weather is hot and the water is warm are more than welcome too ;) (has to be east coast area as north as Cairns to as southern as Melbourne)

Answer:
Jan/Feb/March is usually our wettest period, but most of it comes in the form of late afternoon/evening thunderstorms and overnight showers and rain. You'll probably find the climate fairly similar to Florida in summer. The Townsville region has a very high quotient of sunshine hours. You'll love Magnetic Island, there's a lot to do at an easy, or as hectic pace as you like. If you wish to come in to town (Magnetic Island is a T/ville suburb), it's just a 20 minute ferry trip.

Have just returned from Townsville last week, and during my week there it rained on and off for less than half of that time. It wasn't enough to prevent me from doing anything but be warned that most of the time the sun was out in all it's glory and it was hot, hot, hot. You'll absolutely love Magnetic Island (Maggie to the locals). Although there are resorts on the island it still retains that natural feel about it. Also the main street in Townsville cbd is in the midst of reconstruction and isn't very attractive or functional at the moment. .. it is to be avoided!
Honestly it depends on the weather at the time. I live in Townsville and it has rained a lot (More than average) since about the 22nd of December. We have also still seen the Sun on a lot of days as well. Like today it hasn't rained up till about 4.00pm and at the moment it's just drizzling. It's quite possible that it may rain all day or it's also possible it won't. Look at Mission beach near Innisfail (1hour south of Cairns). Also The Strand in Townsville. Iconic Bondi Beach in Sydney would be worth a look. Look into the beaches on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Beach as well. Magnetic Island is quite nice. Just a short ferry ride from Townsville with a great tropical feel. If you choose not to base yourself there you could still base yourself in Townsville and do a trip for a couple of days.
