Why do DVDs from the UK and Australia / New Zealand all work in UK / Aus / NZ DVD players?

UK is region 2, Australia / New Zealand is region 4, yet DVDs from either region works in either region. What's the reason for this region matching? What's the point in making other regions not match? OK, for some reason I cannot get the full list of categories so it's going to have to go in one of the suggested.

Even if you do not have a multi-region player do a a web search for the make and model of your DVD player followed by the words "multi region hack" and you may discover some useful information.
