our landlines have 8 digits preceded by a 2 digit area code. each state has its own area code except tasmania which has the same as Victoria. So a Sydney number might look like this 02 1234 5678, a Queensland number 07 1234 5678 etc. Our mobile numbers consist of 6 digits preceded by a 4 digit provider code. so it looks like this 0400 123456 for example. Mike is correct. A few years ago, they changed the area codes from a regional basis to a State basis; which simplifies them a lot (for example, the area code for all of NSW is now 02; but before different regions had their own codes, eg northern NSW area code used to be 066.) Now they are incorporated into the 8 digit code. For example, northern NSW is now 02 66XX XXXX, in which the 66 is retained as part of the 8 digit number. This is useful to remember, if you have an old telephone book, or a listing that is more than 10 years old. Also, if you are calling from overseas, the country code for Australia is 61, and when calling from overseas, you drop the first zero from the area code. eg, to call the number above from overseas, it would be: (your international call code) + 61 2 66XX XXXX. Couple of other points: When calling international numbers for most countries, you drop the first zero in the area code EXCEPT for Italy, where it is retained. Postal codes in Australia are four digit numbers, with the first digit being the same as the digit after the zero int he telephone area code. eg, for NSW it would be 2XXX, eg Chatswood near Sydney is 2165. These are for street addresses, and to confuse matters, for postal box numbers the code starts with 1, eg 1XXX; but usually these are for businesses.
