How much summer clothes do I need for a holiday?

U.S. citizen considering working summer holiday in NZ with the Working Holiday Scheme. What do I need to know?

  • Pretty self-explanatory. I'm just looking into this for either this summer or the next. I plan to eventually immigrate to New Zealand, so I though this would be a good way to check it out over the course of a summer. Was thinking about working in agriculture because, even though my degree is in Writing/Lit, orchard-work/farming are my greatest areas of expertise at the moment. Thank-you in advance for any help you can provide.

  • Answer:

Well you've already missed this summer so it would have to be next year. If you are looking for agricultural work coming during the Northern Hemisphere summer wouldn't be very good. Apple picking is biggest in February and March and the area to go to for that is Hawke's Bay. Look into Napier as a place to live.

Just be sure you check the New Zealand Department of Immigration website and meet all the criteria to qualify for a WHV. As another poster stated, summer is winding down here in the southern hemisphere.(Probably hard to imagine mid-July as wintertime!) Look at www.trademe.co.nz for costs as far as rent and job availability. Do a search for seasonal jobs, New Zealand, on line to find out more. Cost of living is higher here. www.woolworths.co.nz will give you an idea of food prices. There are also some farmstay programs where you work something like 4 hours per day on a farm in exchange for a place to stay.
