Can I get PR (Permanent residency) or TR (Temporary Residency) in Australia?
-
Now for the details. I have come to Australia to study for my masters Degree which is almost done now. I have been here for 1.5 years already and my Study Visa will expire in March 2010. Is there any way I can get PR or even PR? What are the conditions for TR in my case and is there going to be any test? Please give me some info on this, I have been searching Google for days now but cant find any answer. Also please dont tell me to go to immi.gov.au, ive already been there and the answer to my question does not exist there. Thank you to all those who reply.

Answer:
I don't understand why you haven't been able to find the answers at the immi.gov.au site because they're definitely all in there and it's absolutely impossible to answer your question fully without linking to pages on that site. You get PR by qualifying for and being granted a permanent visa. Australia is not like other countries where you are granted PR after living there on some kind of temporary visa for 'n' years. By the end of your course, if you have completed 2 Academic years of study (92 weeks), you may be eligible to apply for an onshore permanent visa but that will depend on your occupation and whether you can pass the points test. Your occupation must be on the Skilled Occupations List (SOL) which also lists how many points that occupation 'earns' for the points test. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/885/ http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1121i.pdf (the SOL) http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/885/eligibility-table-overseas.htm (the points test - click on the links under Eligibility requirements for full explanations and available points) If you can't pass the points test immediately because of a lack of work experience, you could apply for an 18 month Skilled – Graduate (Temporary) visa (subclass 485) which allows you to work (without the 20 hour student restrictions) until you can pass the points test. As soon as you qualify, you apply for a permanent visa as above. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/485/ Another type of temporary visa is a Subclass 457 – Business (Long Stay) visa – Standard Business Sponsorship for which there is no points test. Your occupation must be on the SOL and you must find an employer who is eligible and willing to sponsor you. On a 457, you must stay with the sponsoring employer or if you leave or lose your job, must find another sponsor or apply for another visa within 28 days or leave the country. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skilled-workers/sbs/ After 2 years, your employer can nominate you for a permanent subclass 856 visa for which there is no points test. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skilled-workers/ens/ (856) While you are waiting for your visa application to be decided, you will be granted a bridging visa that will allow you to stay in Australia though it will probably have the same work restrictions as the student visa from which you will be applying. The time taken for a decision will depend on the visa (employer sponsored are the fastest) and your occupation according to our current visa processing priorities. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/pdf/faq-priority-processing.pdf
