Whats the legal drinking age in New Zealand?

  • im going to New Zealand in november and i was just wondering what the legal drinking age is. i heard that it's 18 but i also heard that it is legal to drink at a restraunt if under 18 but im not sure if this is true. Thanks!

    You must be 18 or over to purchase alcohol or tobacco products in New Zealand. You can drink on any privately owned property that allows it, i.e not in a public place (in the street, a carpark etc.) if you are over 18. If you are under 18, you can only drink alcohol that has been supplied to you by a parent or guardian. Nobody else will be able to supply you with alcohol unless you are over 18 with photo ID, including resturants.

Actually, drinking is encouraged from birth in NZ... something about being a necessity of life. If you were referring to the imbibing of drinks made from the fermentation of organic substances then the legal age is 18. Please note... this requires the rapid consumption of alcho-pops and an advanced state of 'Richard Cranium' ness. Dining with ones parents or guardians used to allow the consumption at an earlier age due to the highly refined atmosphere and purported level of supervision by I think that is no longer true.

18 it used to be 20 and then it was changed right before the 2000 Millennium Celebrations. I remember that because it seemed opportune - they figured out a great way to get more money for a special event: increase the population of people who are legally allowed to drink!! Of course, the only reason i remember that is because i was at university at the time and was 19.
