Would U.S Customs charge for a $32 package from Japan?

Posting goods from the US to Australia; will Australian customs charge me?

  • My dad is sending me a brand new camera from the states to Melbourne, Australia. The camera itself costs around $400 US and the total contents of the package (extra battery, case, etc) comes to around $425. I'd like to know if Australian customs will charge me or my dad anything extra for this package once it hits Australia? I read on the Australian customs website that any goods costing under $1000 AUS are exempt from any concessions or import taxes, but I wanted to ask around to make sure what the rules are regarding sending electronic goods like a camera to Australia from abroad. Cheers!

  • Answer:

A.K. I asked a similar question to the Australian High Commission in Ottawa Canada. They advised me, as long as the item is declared and is a gift, and the amount does not exceed $1,000.00 Australian dollars there is no duty/sales tax applicable. Now that was three years ago. Your dad should ask this question of the Australian Embassy in Washington.
