What are the best cities/areas in Australia to raise a family?

  • What are the best cities/areas in Australia to raise a family? Me and my girlfriend (who's from NZ) want to move to Australia and start a family. I grew up on the East Coast of the US and surf as much as I can and love to be in the water. My girlfriend does surf as much as I do but loves the water just as much. So, we're looking for a friendly, nice place that's either near or on the beach. So, what is the best cities/areas in Australia? Thanks for answering!

    Sydney is great with some of the best beaches and surf in the country. The closer you are to the beach, however, the more expensive it is to buy or rent a house. That applies to all cities. Perth is a lovely city but its major drawback is that it is so far from anywhere else. Of the capital cities, only Sydney and Perth have surf on the city beaches. All the other cities require a drive of an hour or so to get to a surf beach. In Sydney you can also take your surfboard to the beach on public transport.

Melbourne's a very nice city with lots of suburbs, very friendly. I had a blast when I was there. Surfing is relatively close too, near the Great Ocean Road southwest of the city.

Sydney and Melbourne are getting a little to overcrowded. I'd recommend Perth or Adelaide. Perth's got one of the best beaches in Australia.

I would recommend Geelong. It is about an hour south west of Melbourne, it is cheap to live, and is the gateway to the famous Great Ocean Road, where some of the best surf beaches in Australia are located such as Bells Beach, Torquay, Jan Juc and more. Geelong is a bit of a beach culture city, so that might suit you.
