In Australia, how do I sign up for medical research?

What is an American Bachelor of Science degree in Biology considered in Australia? I need a research tech job!?

  • I'm looking into moving to Australia and will be seeking a job as a research assistant or research technician when I arrive. I am wondering if my qualifications will be sufficient to get a job in research lab that will allow me (a 22-year-old fresh out of university) to support myself.

  • Answer:

Some things to remember - there are only 40 universities in Australia - of these about 30-33 teach biology. Each Biology department (thinking of the one in NSW as an example) may have 4-5 technical positions. These usually are filled within house from in-house graduates as in 10 years in Sydney I have only seen 1 position advertised. My advise would be not to expect to get a position in research UNLESS you have a PhD and then you need to look at postdocs. RA/Tech positions are become extinct rapidly.

I'm afraid you wouldn't be eligible for permanent residency (unless you're maried to an Aussie?), but you could get a working holiday visa. It's called the same in Australia - a Bachelor of Science in biology. http://www.immi.gov.au http://www.seek.com.au
