What are the best places to visit on North Island, New Zealand?

Hi we are planning to travel around North Island fro about 3 weeks. Where do you recommend to go and what are the main places we need to visit?

Answer:
What Jennifer h said, (except it's the HUKA falls, not Hooker falls). And I'm not certain I'd go out of my way for Wellington as a tourist unless I was going to the South Island. And also Waipa & Wiatomo (South Waikato), North & Coastal Taranaki, The Wairarapa, The East Cape, The Bay of plenty/Tauranga. Plenty of beautiful scenery and laid back, hospitable people. P.S. there's a New Zealand section where people can give you good answers about NZ.

The bay of Islands and the Coromandel penisular are lovely. I would especially go to Rotorua if you want to see plenty of Thermal activity .Waitomo caves are great. Taupo is lovely make sure you see Hooker falls there and you can sit in the Thermal pools at debretts there. Napier is a nice place then also there is the National parks and mountains after that if you have time go and spend 3 or 4 days in Wellington. Lovely Boutique shops . Take a ride up on the Cable Car for great views. and walk through the Botanical gardens there . Also a look at the Te papa museum and if you have a spare day take a ferry ride to picton

Hey. First off, you will love NZ, it is very different but probably the best place I have ever been. I recommend going from top to bottom, without a plan. Its really easy, and the locals are very helpful and friendly

New Zealand is a fantastic place to visit! I love it there. Last time I went, I used Owner Direct Vacation Rentals to find a place to stay. They have some really nice vacation rentals in New Zealand: http://www.ownerdirect.com/lodging/newzealand/northisland/newzealand.htm Since I found out about vacation rentals, I've never stayed in a hotel again! The cost is usually the same or less than a hotel too. Have a look at that site, and see if you see something you like. If you do, they'll put you directly in contact with the home owner, so you won't have any surprises, and you can set things up just the way you want. Have a great time in New Zealand!
