Oceanic means that the temperature is regulated by being near the sea. Sydney and Brisbane are both near the sea which means their temperatures are more mild than other places. I don't like labelling Sydney as sub-tropical, because I am from tropical Australia, but Sydney is generally too far north and too close to the ocean to get frosts, the core element of being subtropical, though the west of Sydney can get some mild frosts and any non-frost resistant plants may suffer during one or two days in winter.

I live in the North West of Sydney & we live in a temperate zone, & yes, we do have frosts.I lived in the central west of NSW previously & find the climate here a little humid at times. The tropical areas start on the far north coast of NSW & stretch right the way up through coastal QLD.
