How do I manage a 9 day trip to Australia in September?
-
I plan on visiting Australia for 9 days in September. I'm going to fly into Sydney and stay a few nights there. I have a friend in Melbourne, so I might spend a day or two there. I would love to see the Great Barrier Reef, some monoliths, and the general landscape of Australia. I know it sounds terribly cliche, but I'm also hoping to see kangaroos and other wildlife in zoos or wildlife preserves. Should I rent a car and I drive to all the sites I want to see? Is it better to join a tour group? Should I stay in Sydney and take day trips to other areas? What's the weather like in September?

Answer:
Sorry but 9 days you would struggle to see 2 cities, not to forget the travel time. You wouldn't be able to drive from Sydney to Cairns and back to Melbourne in 9 days. You would be just about driving non stop. I would fly into Sydney, spend four or five days depending on what time you arrive, basically 4 full days, then fly to Melbourne costs around $100 spend time with your friend, she can take you to the zoo's and show you the animals etc, then fly home from Melbourne. If you have already booked your flight then fly Melbourne to Syd the same day or day before your return flight home.

by your question i see you have NO IDEA of the size of Australia & the distances involved to go to the places you want to see have a good look at a map before you even think of booking places to stay as to do what you want will require a lot of time in planes traveling around the country weather will depend on where you are in Australia on particular day's

Did you know that Australia is roughly the same size as America? You haven't a hope of doing all of that in nine days. The first day, you will be too exhausted to do anything anyway. For the kind of program you describe, you would need a minimum of three weeks. I would stick to seeing two cities, possibly Melbourne and Sydney (both have zoos, Taronga in Sydney is world class) and one other attraction. You will have no choice but to fly, driving those distances would kill you and you wouldn't manage it in the time available anyway.

in 9 days i would definitely say to not go to melbourne and maybe see sydney, alice springs - for the outback, cairns - great barrier reef and definitely fly between cities. have a great time

There are cheap flights between the major cities (appox $70 last time I looked) which is the only way you would have a remote chance of seeing all you want to see (trying putting Melbourne to Sydney into google maps and see how long it will take u to drive :p) You could start in Sydney for 3 days (I'm sure the Sydney zoo would have kangaroos etc) then go to Cairns for 3 days to see the great barrier reef then down to Melbourne for ur final 3 days. Cairns will be hot in sept while sydney and melbourne should just be starting to heat up (but bring a jumper just in case).
