At what age do children start school in Australia?
-
We are about to move to Australia soon...probably within 6 months or so on a PR visa. I have a son who is 2 years and 4 months old. At what age do they start school in Australia?

Answer:
Each State is different, and the official rules are flexible anyway, especially for the private schools, where about one third of all children are educated. The NSW system quotes: Children may enter Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year in NSW government schools, if they turn five on or before 31st July in that year. On that basis, a child that is about 4 years and 6 months old is able to start Kindergarten (the year before Year One). The terms for the year before Year 1 can also be confusing. It is called Kindergarten in NSW, Prep in QLD, whilst in WA, they have both Kindergarten and Pre-primary which, although not compulsory, are attended by most Western Australian children, who must be at least 3 years and 6 months old to start.

Education in Australia is primarily the responsibility of the states and territories. School education in Australia is compulsory between certain ages as specified by state or territory legislation. Depending on the state or territory, and date of birth of the child, school is compulsory from the age of five to six to the age of fifteen to seventeen. Pre-school (also known as Kindergarten in some states and territories) in Australia is relatively unregulated, and is not compulsory. Pre-school is offered to three- to five-year-olds. The year before a child is due to attend primary school is the main year for pre-school education. http://www.immi.gov.au/living-in-australia/settle-in-australia/everyday-life/education/ .. http://www.aph.gov.au/library/pubs/bn/2007-08/PreschoolEdAustralia.htm#_Toc198010807 ..
