What age does preschool start in australia?

At what age do children start school in Australia?

  • We are about to move to Australia soon...probably within 6 months or so on a PR visa. I have a son who is 2 years and 4 months old. At what age do they start school in Australia? How many years is school there before they go to university? And how good is education (school) in Australia?

  • Answer:

as billy said, it varies by state, so ill just give you victoria's. kindergarten; 3-4 years old primary school (prep, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) - 5-11 years old high school (years 7 - 12 (11&12 VCE (HSC equivalent))) - 12-18 years old your son would probably start kinder in 2013, maybe next year though not likely,. the school year runs from January to December and theres an age cutoff date set at the end of April. ie a child born April 30 this year could start primary school in 2016, a child born May 1st would start in 2017

Most people start school at around 5. It is different between each state but one will have to progress through 2 different schools before university - Primary (K-6) and Secondary (7-12). Provided they don't repeat, most people finish school in 13 years. K-6 = 7 years 7-12 = 6 years Although people can drop out in Year 10, to be considered for university, they must continue onto Year 12 and complete all the final exams to receive an admission rank for consideration when applying for university. There are, however, other pathways top university which I don't recommend telling your children about such as TAFE and college but it is very competitive to get in via those paths. Education in Australia is excellent. A lot of people come here for it.

It varies slightly from state to state. Most students would be turning 5 at some point in their first year of school. You can attend pre school before this from the age of about 3. There are 13 years of formal education (in NSW, anyway). To go to uni you will need to go all the way to year 12. The most common way to get into Uni is based on the results of year 11 and year 12 (senior high school). Although there are alternatives if you stuff up your HSC (higher school certificate). I believe you must stay at school until you are 15, most students these days go all the way through to yr 12. infants school - 3 years - Kindergarten, year 1 and year 2 - students are generally 4 to 5 yrs in Kindergarten primary school - 4 years - year 3 to 6 high school - 6 years - year 7 - 12 (students generally 17/18 by year 12) How good is the education... Dunno, depends a bit on the school and what your expectations are. I believe that the public school system does provide a good level of eductation, some would disagree with me. But then again, I studied and paid attention and got the most out of it. A lot of people blame the system when all they did was jack-off in the back row.
