Is there any work in child care in Australia?

Can I move to Australia from UK to be a nursery nurse (child care worker) with a level 4 NVQ Apprenticehsip?

  • I really want to move to Butler in Western Australia, but I am currently training to be a Nursery Assistant (child care worker I believe Australian's call it) and plan to get an NVQ Qualification level 4 apprenticeship in childrens and young peoples work force to be a nursery manager. People have told me I need degrees and stuff out there, but I'm happy with this career choice but want to live in Australia. Will I be able to with just the above qualification ? Peace Out x

  • Answer:

You can only move to Australia if your occupation is listed as being eligible for skilled immigration. If you are a fully qualified and experienced Child Care Centre Manager, you are eligible to apply but no other occupations in the Child Care field are listed as there is no shortage of childcare workers at any other level. In order to apply for a visa as a Child Care Centre Manager/Co-Ordinator, you must meet the following requirements which are taken from the TRA assessment criteria. A positive skills assessment from TRA is a mandatory prerequisite before lodging a visa application. • Applicants must have completed a two year accredited post-secondary course in child care (diploma or advanced diploma) or three year accredited tertiary course in early childhood care or education. • Employment: Applicants must have three years supervisory employment that reflects the responsibilities, duties and tasks of a Child Care Co-ordinator. This must be obtained in an environment of substantial size and reputation and subject to a regulatory framework, and gained after the accredited course referred to above is completed. • Evidence of 12 months paid full-time employment in the nominated trade within the 24 months prior to lodging an application must also be provided • Applicants must have demonstrated proficiency in English language literacy and numeracy with an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least six in all four components. http://www.deewr.gov.au/Skills/Programs/SkillsAssess/TRA/residenceVisa/Documents/AssessmentCriteria.pdf TRA assessment criteria - see point 14.
