Move to Australia from America?
-
I want to move to Australia from America. I mean I am serious about it, currently I am interning at Federal Aviation Admnistration (FAA) in California in the IT field. Recently because of this, I decided to pursue for an Air Traffic Controller Career as I have enough reference and contacts and I know how stressful Government jobs are. My point is I want to continue as an Air Traffic Controller preferably in Australia, but cant do it because you need to be an Aussie Citizen. I am a US Citizen but want does anyone know or if possible that you can transfer citizenship or a dual citizenship for Aussie? I visited Sydney already and would want to live there, i have cousins and friends living there as well. I want to know if I can pursue "Air Services Australia" School for Air Traffic Controller or Aviation/Aircraft mechanics or Pilot. The bottom line, I want to continue aviation school in Australia and if anyone knows anything about this or share their experiences or anyone they know I can contact, please help me out I want to move from US to Australia to continue education or land an aviation career in Australia. Please no silly or negative answers, any helpful and motivating answers would be most appreciated :) Thanks guys!!

Answer:
Air Traffic Controllers are employed by Air Services Australia which is a Government department and thus its employees are public servants. To become a public servant you must have permanent residency in Australia with the intention of becoming an Australian citizen if you are not already an Australian citizen. Both the US and Australia recognise dual citizenship, the USA did so quite recently. Rupert Murdoch had to renounce his Australian citizenship when he became a US citizen years ago but when the USA changed the rules, he got his citizenship back without losing his US citizenship. If you become an Australian citizen you don't lose your US citizenship. You can certainly learn to be a pilot in Australia without being an Australian citizen but if you want to do any course conducted by Air Services Australia the permanent residency/Australian citizenship thing applies unless you are an overseas student being trained here to work in your own country.

the only way you can gain citizenship is to qualify to immigrate by being formally skilled and experienced in an occupation listed as needing workers, then after living in Australia for 4 years you can apply for citizenship
